Waste Water Operative

Job Purpose: Work as part of the operational team maintaining the Island’s wastewater system, helping to keep pumping stations, treatment plants and other wastewater assets operating safely and effectively. The role is mainly based at Meary Veg Wastewater Treatment Works but involves working at other Manx Utilities locations when required.   

Duties  
- Operate and maintain wastewater pumping stations, treatment plants and associated equipment.
- Assist with maintaining the wastewater network, sea outfalls and private drainage systems.
- Help empty septic tanks, cess pits and other storage tanks.
- Carry out groundworks and repairs to wastewater infrastructure.
- Work safely in confined spaces using breathing apparatus.
- Drive and operate vehicles as required.
- Operate small plant and equipment.
- Carry out routine vehicle checks including oil, water, tyres and cleaning.
- Complete plant logs, vehicle defect reports and other required records.
- Follow safe working practices and health and safety procedures.
- Provide a good service to customers and communicate with members of the public, contractors and colleagues.
- Take part in the 24-hour emergency response and standby rota when required.
- Undertake relevant training, including First Aid.
- Work flexibly at different Manx Utilities locations when required.

Essential Skills  
- Full driving licence.
- Experience working in a relevant operational environment.
- Basic numeracy and literacy skills.
- Basic knowledge of the Island’s wastewater infrastructure.
- Awareness of health and safety and ability to work safely.
- Effective communication skills with colleagues, members of the public, contractors and consultants.
- Basic computer skills.
- Physically fit and confident working safely in confined spaces, including using breathing apparatus.
- Able and willing to work with wastewater.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Self-motivated, reliable and flexible approach.
- Able to work unsocial hours and participate in an out-of-hours rota when required.
- Willingness to learn new skills.

Desirable Skills  
- HGV licence.
- Two GCSEs or equivalent at Grade C/4 or above, including Maths and English.
- Mechanical or labouring skills.
