Job Purpose: Train to become an Emergency Care Assistant, responding to emergency, urgent and routine ambulance calls across the Isle of Man. You will work under supervision to provide patient care and treatment, drive ambulance vehicles, transport patients safely and maintain ambulance vehicles and equipment. Successful completion of the expected 26-week training programme will lead to a Band 4 position.
Duties
- Respond to emergency, urgent and routine ambulance calls.
- Provide appropriate care, treatment and transportation for patients under supervision.
- Assist paramedics and other healthcare professionals in emergency situations.
- Assess patients, take observations and help provide appropriate treatment.
- Learn and use emergency care techniques including CPR, defibrillation, airway management and first aid.
- Administer approved medicines and treatments in line with training and guidelines.
- Drive ambulance vehicles, including emergency driving once appropriately trained and qualified.
- Lift, move and transport patients safely using appropriate equipment and manual handling techniques.
- Complete patient care records accurately and provide information during patient handovers.
- Communicate sensitively with patients, relatives and carers, including during difficult or distressing situations.
- Work alongside other emergency services and healthcare professionals.
- Carry out daily checks of ambulance vehicles, medical equipment, drugs and supplies.
- Restock vehicles and report any equipment or vehicle faults.
- Clean ambulances, clinical equipment and work areas to required standards.
- Follow safeguarding procedures and report concerns about children or vulnerable adults.
- Maintain confidentiality and follow health and safety procedures.
- Attend training and keep your skills and knowledge up to date.
- Work shifts including unsocial hours and from ambulance stations across the Island.
Essential Skills
- Must be at least 18 years old on the first day of training.
- Level 2/GCSE qualifications in literacy and numeracy, or equivalent.
- Basic understanding of first aid.
- Full manual driving licence held for at least one year, valid in the Isle of Man.
- No more than three penalty points on your driving licence.
- Full Category C1 driving entitlement – provisional C1 is not sufficient.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Physically able to carry out the role, including lifting and moving patients and equipment.
- Able to meet DVLA Group 2 medical clearance standards.
- Self-motivated and willing to undertake extensive training.
- Able to work with people in challenging, emotional or emergency situations.
- Commitment to equality, diversity and safeguarding.
- Able to work shifts and unsocial hours.
- Satisfactory police check.
Desirable Skills
- IT skills.
- Previous healthcare experience.
- Isle of Man Worker status.
