Job Purpose: To provide person-centred care and support for adults living in a residential dementia care setting, making sure their health, personal care, safety and emotional needs are met in a homely, respectful and dignified way. You will be a key point of contact for residents and families, helping them feel listened to, valued and safe.
Duties
- Support residents with daily living (personal care, washing, dressing, toileting, mobility and activities of daily life) while promoting independence, choice, dignity and privacy.
- Help residents make informed choices about their care and lifestyle, encouraging social contact and inclusion.
- Plan, deliver and review recreational and therapeutic activities that maintain or improve residents’ quality of life.
- Act as a keyworker, building positive relationships with residents and relatives and acting as a consistent contact.
- Write, update and review care plans, risk assessments and daily records, clearly recording any changes in needs or condition.
- Observe residents’ physical and mental health, recognise signs of illness or deterioration and seek timely advice or emergency help.
- Administer medication once trained, following policies for safe storage, accurate recording and reporting of any concerns or errors.
- Support residents at mealtimes, including serving food, assisting with eating and monitoring nutrition and hydration.
- Escort residents to appointments and community activities, helping them stay connected with the wider community.
- Carry out light housekeeping and laundry tasks when required to keep the environment clean, safe and comfortable.
- Communicate clearly and sensitively with residents, relatives and colleagues, and escalate any concerns or complaints in line with policy.
- Attend handovers, meetings, supervision and training to keep skills and knowledge up to date.
- Follow all Manx Care policies, including confidentiality, data protection, health and safety and safeguarding, and work within relevant legislation and standards.
- Use equipment safely, report faults or hazards and contribute to maintaining a secure, tidy and pleasant home environment.
Essential Skills
- Willingness to complete RQF Level 2 in Health & Social Care within agreed timescales.
- Commitment to organising, delivering and reviewing meaningful recreational activities.
- Good spoken and written English, with clear, accurate record-keeping.
- Understanding of confidentiality, data protection and professional boundaries.
- Good numeracy and basic IT skills, including use of electronic care record systems.
- Understanding of health and safety, including assessing and managing risk.
- Strong interpersonal skills, able to work well in a team and also use own initiative.
- Calm, resilient approach when under pressure or dealing with distressing situations.
- Alignment with Manx Care’s CARE values and a caring, person-centred attitude.
- Punctual, reliable and committed to delivering a high standard of care.
- Able to travel between different homes/venues on the Island as required.
- Flexible to work on a rota including nights, weekends, bank holidays and unsociable hours.
- Physically able to meet the moving, handling and practical demands of the role.
- Willing to undergo and pass all required pre-employment and police checks.
Desirable Skills
- Level 2 vocational qualification in Health & Social Care or similar (e.g. QCF/RQF).
- Experience working with vulnerable adults, ideally in a dementia care setting.
- Experience supporting people living with dementia and understanding of their specific needs.
- Isle of Man Worker status.
