Job Purpose: Support primary school kitchens across the Isle of Man by helping prepare and serve meals, order supplies, and maintain high standards of food hygiene, cleanliness, and safety.
Duties
- Help order food and supplies in line with menus, approved suppliers, and financial procedures.
- Check deliveries for quality, quantity, damage, use-by dates, and correct storage requirements.
- Use safe stock rotation and prevent cross-contamination.
- Assist with cooking savoury and sweet dishes, including special dietary meals.
- Help serve meals and encourage pupils in a friendly, positive way.
- Prepare vegetables, fruit, and salads as needed.
- Follow food safety processes (including temperature checks) and keep accurate records for inspection.
- Support kitchen safety checks, audits, and compliance with Environmental Health and Health & Safety guidance.
- Report pest control needs and any equipment defects; help arrange repairs or replacements where required.
- Carry out daily cleaning, regular deep cleans, and safe waste and refuse disposal, including COSHH compliance.
- Help with basic admin such as paperwork, ordering systems, stocktaking, and investigating complaints.
- Work safely at all times, follow risk assessments, and help maintain a secure, hygienic kitchen environment.
- Build good working relationships, maintain confidentiality, attend training and meetings, and wear the required uniform and safety shoes.
- Follow safeguarding procedures and report any concerns to the designated Child Protection Officer.
Essential Skills
- Experience working in a catering role, ideally within a medium or large organisation.
- Able to work without supervision and as part of a team.
- Good organisational skills.
- Ability to work well under pressure.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Understand the importance of confidentiality.
- Able to identify food production hazards and risks.
- Friendly, cheerful manner and awareness of own limitations.
- Flexible and able to work shifts.
- Reliable.
- Satisfactory police check.
- Full, valid driving licence.
Desirable skills:
- Basic Hygiene Certificate.
- Professional catering qualification or NVQ Level 2.
- Manual handling training or certificate.
- First Aid certificate.
- Awareness of food safety legislation.
- Basic knowledge of nutritional and therapeutic diets.
- Budget management awareness or experience.
- Knowledge of Health and Safety at Work requirements.
- Isle of Man Worker status.
