Job Purpose: The MET Technician helps monitor and record weather conditions at Ronaldsway Meteorological Office to support aviation safety and the Island’s national weather service. The role involves observing weather changes, producing regular reports for pilots, and maintaining important climate records used to understand weather patterns on the Isle of Man.  

Duties  
- Monitor weather conditions at Isle of Man Airport and keep a constant weather watch.
- Produce half-hourly aviation weather reports (METARs) and extra reports when weather conditions change.
- Follow aviation and meteorological observation standards set by international and UK organisations.
- Track weather patterns across the Isle of Man, North Irish Sea and British Isles.
- Collect and record weather data such as temperature, rainfall, wind, cloud cover and pressure.
- Visit the meteorological enclosure on the airfield and check weather equipment.
- Maintain and repair meteorological instruments, sensors and systems when needed.
- Maintain detailed climate records using spreadsheets and databases.
- Record tide heights and compare predicted values with actual readings.
- Produce climate reports, weather diaries and daily weather records.
- Respond to enquiries about past weather events and provide weather data where required.
- Work as part of a small team and support forecasters during shifts.

Essential Skills
- 5 GCSEs at grade C (4) or above including English Language (or equivalent).
- Strong IT skills including Microsoft Office and Excel.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to prioritise tasks and work accurately.
- Good knowledge of geography and the local area including the Isle of Man and British Isles.
- Ability to work shifts including weekends and public holidays.
- Motivated, reliable and able to stay calm under pressure.

Desirable skills
- Knowledge of meteorology or climatology.
- Maths or Physics at AS Level or higher, or willingness to study these subjects further.
- Experience using mapping or weather software such as GIS or Visual Weather.
- Interest in local weather and climate.
- Full valid driving licence and access to a vehicle.
