Job Purpose: Work in the Histopathology laboratory at Noble's Hospital, helping to receive, check, prepare and process patient specimens. You will support Biomedical Scientists and Pathologists, maintain laboratory records and equipment, and deal with enquiries from healthcare professionals and members of the public.
Duties
- Receive, check, sort and record patient specimens.
- Enter pathology requests accurately onto laboratory computer systems.
- Prepare and document specimens ready for examination and testing.
- Assist Pathologists and Biomedical Scientists with specimen dissection and tissue processing.
- Prepare chemical solutions and laboratory materials.
- Carry out manual laboratory techniques and quality control procedures.
- Help maintain and clean laboratory equipment and processing machines.
- Monitor and maintain stocks of reagents and consumables.
- Maintain laboratory records, logs and documentation.
- File laboratory documentation, slides and tissue blocks.
- Store and dispose of tissue, reagents and clinical waste safely.
- Deal with clinical waste spills and decontaminate laboratory equipment and surfaces.
- Respond professionally to telephone and face-to-face enquiries.
- Provide guidance to patients and healthcare professionals about specimen collection.
- Report unsuitable specimens, equipment problems and warning messages to Biomedical Scientists.
- Assist with laboratory audits and the development of procedures.
- Help train and mentor new members of staff.
- Attend relevant training and complete 12–18 months of in-house training.
- Follow confidentiality, health and safety, COSHH and laboratory procedures at all times.
Essential Skills
- Five GCSEs at Grade C/4 or above, including Maths, English and a Science subject, or equivalent academic skills.
- Willingness to complete relevant in-house training within 12–18 months of starting the role.
- Basic knowledge of the Human Tissue Act.
- Understanding of Health and Safety and COSHH regulations.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to communicate professionally with a wide range of people.
- IT literate with good keyboard skills.
- Calm and well organised.
- Self-reliant and able to work independently.
- Good teamworking skills.
- Ability to work accurately and follow laboratory procedures.
Desirable Skills
- Previous NHS or medical experience.
- Previous Medical Laboratory Assistant experience.
- Relevant laboratory experience.
- Experience training others.
- Knowledge of anatomical sites for specimen separation.
- Knowledge of specimen fixation and decalcification.
- Interest in science or healthcare-related fields.
