Manual Operative (Water Works Gang)

Job Purpose: Support the Water Works Gang in maintaining and repairing the Island’s water network, carrying out excavation, installation and maintenance work safely and efficiently to help provide reliable water services across the Isle of Man.    

Duties
- Work as part of a small team carrying out water network maintenance across the Island.
- Excavate, lay, joint, backfill and reinstate new water mains and service connections.
- Install new water services and repair or renew existing services.
- Repair burst water mains, valves, hydrants, stop taps and marker posts.
- Carry out routine isolation, draining and recharging of water mains.
- Assist with disinfection of water mains and follow hygiene procedures.
- Investigate, detect and help prevent water loss and leaks.
- Flush water mains and carry out other routine maintenance tasks.
- Follow health, safety, environmental and industry standards at all times.
- Complete forms and records accurately and work in line with risk assessments and method statements.
- Work flexibly at different Manx Utilities locations as required.

Essential Skills
- Full valid driving licence.
- Good awareness of health, safety and environmental practices.
- Positive attitude and strong teamwork skills.
- Good organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Basic numeracy and literacy skills.
- Ability to complete written records and forms accurately.
- Reliable and self-motivated.
- Willingness to learn new skills and undertake training.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physically fit and confident working outdoors, including in confined spaces.

Desirable Skills
- Two GCSEs (or equivalent) including English and Maths.
- Experience of groundwork.
- Experience of excavation, trenching and using small plant and equipment.
- Experience working with risk assessments and method statements.
- HGV licence.
- Good geographical knowledge of the Isle of Man.
