Job Purpose: Support children with special educational needs in Ballacottier School's Specialist Provision Centre during lunchtime, helping to keep them safe and well while encouraging positive play, good behaviour and independence.
Duties
- Supervise and support children throughout the lunchtime period.
- Provide one-to-one or group support for children with special educational needs.
- Encourage positive play and build good relationships with children.
- Support children with eating, including cutting up food, opening packets and individual feeding programmes.
- Assist with personal care, including toileting and changing when required.
- Follow individual behaviour and support programmes.
- Encourage good manners and positive behaviour.
- Follow specialist programmes such as PECS and TEACCH where required.
- Undertake appropriate medical training, which may include suction and PEG feeding.
- Use specialist moving and handling techniques and equipment where required.
- Deal with minor injuries, seek assistance when needed and ensure incidents are reported.
- Work closely with the Specialist Provision Centre and teaching staff.
- Maintain confidentiality about individual children.
- Attend relevant meetings and training.
- Follow safeguarding, health and safety and school policies at all times.
Essential Skills
- Willingness to support children with special educational needs individually and in groups.
- Willingness to assist with feeding, personal hygiene, toileting and changing.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Approachable and able to relate well to children and adults.
- Willingness to undertake new and refresher training.
- Discreet and able to maintain confidentiality.
- Calm and sensible approach.
- Satisfactory police check.
Desirable Skills
- Experience working with or caring for primary or secondary school-aged children.
- Enthusiastic, energetic and positive approach.
- Experience of voluntary youth work such as Brownies or Scouts.
- Current First Aid Certificate.
- Isle of Man Worker status.
