Job Purpose: Support pupils at the Specialist Provision Centre (SPC) during lunchtime to ensure their safety, welfare, hygiene, positive play and inclusion, including one-to-one and group support for children with special educational needs.
Duties
- Supervise pupils across dining room/SPC and outdoor areas; encourage good manners and positive play.
- Ensure pupils use the toilet, wash hands and are clean and ready for lessons.
- Provide care and support including one-to-one; assist with feeding, cutting food, opening packets and individual feeding programmes.
- Assist with personal care, toileting and changing; follow specialist toileting programmes and use required equipment.
- Apply agreed behaviour policies; use incentives and sanctions appropriately; maintain calm, respectful authority.
- Promote safe, inclusive play; liaise with SPC team on suitable play equipment.
- Administer basic first aid; record incidents/accidents and escalate concerns promptly.
- Follow individual programmes (e.g., PECS, TEACCH) and use specialist equipment as directed.
- Undertake required medical competencies (e.g., suction, gastrostomy/enteral feeding) after training.
- Use safe moving & handling techniques; maintain cleanliness and follow risk assessments.
- Maintain confidentiality; cooperate with staff on duty; attend meetings and training as required.
Essential Skills
- Willing to provide ongoing care and support, including one-to-one and small groups for children with SEN.
- Willing to assist with feeding, personal hygiene, toileting and changing.
- Team player; able to work well with colleagues.
- Approachable; relates well to children and adults; calm and discreet with a common-sense approach.
- Enthusiastic, energetic and optimistic; willing to undertake new and refresher training (including safeguarding/medical competencies as required).
- Satisfactory police check.
Desirable skills
- Experience caring for or working with school-age children.
- Current First Aid Certificate.
- Isle of Man Worker status.
- Voluntary youth work (e.g., Brownies, Scouts).
