Job Purpose: To support Registered Nurses in delivering high-quality, patient-centred care, recovery and rehabilitation to adults experiencing acute mental illness on the inpatient wards and in the community at Manannan Court.  

Duties
- Support Registered Nurses with assessing, planning, delivering and reviewing care for patients with acute mental health needs.
- Build and maintain therapeutic, recovery-focused relationships with patients and their families or carers.
- Assist patients with daily living activities, including personal care, mobility, eating and drinking, sleep and hygiene, while respecting dignity and choice.
- Encourage patients to be as independent as possible and to engage in rehabilitation activities on the ward and in the community.
- Take part in patient-centred group and individual activities, including social, creative, physical and recreational sessions.
- Observe patients’ mental, emotional and physical health, accurately recording information and reporting any changes to the Registered Nurse.
- After training, complete basic clinical tasks such as taking observations, urine testing, simple wound dressings and fluid balance monitoring.
- Escort patients safely to appointments, interviews, home visits and community activities as required.
- Help to maintain a safe, clean, therapeutic ward environment and follow health and safety, infection control and safeguarding procedures.
- Contribute to patient documentation and handovers, maintaining confidentiality and clear written and verbal communication.
- Respond appropriately to emergencies, including incidents of violence, self-harm, missing patients, fire or medical emergencies, following local policies.
- Work effectively as part of the multi-disciplinary team and take part in supervision, appraisal, training and service development.
- Support stock control and the safe storage and use of ward equipment and patient property and finances in line with guidelines.
- Work a rotating shift pattern over 24 hours, including nights, weekends and bank holidays.

Essential Skills
- Good spoken and written English and adequate literacy skills.
- Ability to communicate clearly, listen well and build rapport with a wide range of people.
- Ability to work compassionately with people experiencing acute mental illness, distress and challenging behaviour.
- Able to work as part of a team and also use own initiative within agreed care plans.
- Able to follow clear instructions, give feedback and know when to seek advice from senior staff.
- Good interpersonal skills and an empathic, patient and caring approach.
- Understanding of confidentiality and willingness to apply it at all times.
- Willingness to learn, attend induction, mandatory training and work towards NVQ/QCF Level 2 in Health and Social Care (or equivalent).
- Basic hygiene skills and commitment to maintaining high standards of personal and patient care.
- Flexible approach to work, including ability to work shifts over 24 hours.
- Physically capable of meeting the demands of the role, including moving and handling, escorting patients and responding quickly to incidents.
- Ability to stay calm and professional in high-pressured or emotionally demanding situations.
- Ability to maintain accurate, legible and timely records.
- Satisfactory Police Check and clearance for relevant safeguarding checks.

Desirable skills
- NVQ/QCF Level 2 in Health and Social Care (or equivalent).
- Previous experience in a caring, nursing or health and social care setting.
- Previous experience of working in mental health services.
- Interest or skills in activities that can be used with patients, e.g. crafts, board games, social or recreational activities.
- Full, valid driving licence and access to own vehicle.
- Isle of Man Worker status.
