Job Purpose: To support Registered Nurses and Senior Health Care Assistants in delivering high quality care to patients on the ward, helping with everyday activities and carrying out clinical and non-clinical tasks under supervision.  

Duties  
- Support patients with personal care including washing, dressing, oral care and toileting.
- Help with meals, hydration and nutritional support.
- Assist with moving and handling patients safely, using equipment where required.
- Take and record basic observations such as blood pressure, pulse, temperature and oxygen levels.
- Monitor and record fluid intake and output.
- Collect urine samples and carry out basic tests as trained.
- Remove urinary catheters and peripheral cannulas (after approved training).
- Support wound care, simple dressings and apply non-prescription creams as directed.
- Carry out weight, height and BMI checks and complete nutritional screening (MUST) after training.
- Escort stable patients to other departments and appointments.
- Maintain accurate written records, countersigned by a Registered Practitioner.
- Respect patient dignity, privacy and confidentiality at all times.
- Follow infection control, safeguarding, health and safety and hospital policies.
- Report any concerns, incidents or changes in a patient’s condition straight away.
- Help keep the ward clean, tidy and well stocked.
- Support new team members and take part in training and development.

Essential Skills
- Good communication skills with patients, families and colleagues.
- Able to work well as part of a team.
- Friendly, caring and approachable manner.
- Understands the importance of confidentiality.
- Flexible and calm in busy or challenging situations.
- Willing to learn and complete mandatory training.
- Able to follow instructions and work with limited supervision.
- Basic IT skills.
- Physically able to meet the demands of the role.
- Satisfactory Police Check.

Desirable Skills
- NVQ Level II in Health and Social Care (or equivalent knowledge and skills).
- Previous experience caring for sick or vulnerable people.
- Isle of Man Worker status.

This role involves being on your feet for long periods, assisting patients with personal care, moving beds and equipment, and working in a busy hospital environment. You may support patients who are very unwell, distressed or nearing end of life, so resilience and compassion are important.
