Love football and want to get involved in a different way?

Becoming a football referee is a great opportunity to stay involved in the game, keep active and earn some extra money. You’ll also build confidence and develop valuable communication, leadership and decision-making skills.

You don’t need any previous refereeing experience. You can start from the age of 14, with local training courses and ongoing support available.

Refereeing can also contribute towards GCSE PE or form part of a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, and there may be opportunities to officiate at tournaments off-Island.

Duties include:
Enforce the Laws of the Game: Apply the IFAB Laws of the Game fairly, consistently and impartially throughout the match.
Ensure Player Safety: Protect players by penalising dangerous play, managing physical contact and stopping play for injuries when required.
Control and Manage the Match: Maintain discipline, manage the tempo of the game and deal with misconduct using cautions (yellow cards) and send-offs (red cards).
Make Accurate Decisions: Judge fouls, offsides where applicable, restarts, goals and infringements in real time.
Work with the Officiating Team: Communicate effectively with assistant referees and other match officials.
Manage Player and Team Conduct: Handle dissent, manage technical areas and communicate decisions clearly to players and coaches.
Apply Match Procedures: Conduct pre-match checks of the pitch, equipment and players; manage substitutions; keep time; and restart play correctly.
Report and Administration: Complete match reports, including disciplinary actions, injuries and incidents, accurately and on time.
Professional Standards: Maintain fitness, keep up to date with changes to the Laws of the Game and demonstrate neutrality and a high standard of behaviour on and off the pitch.
