Job Purpose: Support students with moderate, severe and complex learning difficulties, disabilities and autism to help them achieve their learning goals and develop confidence, independence and life skills. You will work as part of the Foundation Learning and Specialist Provision Centre teams, providing practical, educational and personal support in the classroom, around UCM and during off-site activities.
Duties
- Support students with learning, communication, social and personal development.
- Help students take part in lessons and activities as independently as possible.
- Provide personal care and support with health, hygiene and daily living needs where required.
- Assist with individual education, behaviour and support plans.
- Encourage positive behaviour, confidence and self-esteem.
- Monitor progress and provide feedback to lecturers and managers.
- Support students during enrichment activities, educational visits and off-site learning.
- Carry out agreed medical care duties following training and competency assessments, including administering medication where appropriate.
- Help prepare learning resources, equipment and classroom activities.
- Support students to develop ICT and independent learning skills.
- Build positive relationships with students, parents, carers and external professionals.
- Provide general administrative support, including photocopying, filing and coursework administration.
- Maintain a safe, inclusive and supportive learning environment.
- Attend meetings, training and professional development activities.
- Follow safeguarding, confidentiality, health and safety, equality and data protection policies at all times.
Essential Skills
- GCSE English and Maths (Grade 4/C or above) or equivalent Level 2 qualifications.
- Experience working with young people.
- Ability to support students with learning difficulties and disabilities.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Good organisational skills and ability to prioritise work.
- Ability to build positive relationships with students and colleagues.
- Commitment to equality, inclusion and safeguarding.
- Flexible, adaptable and able to use your own initiative.
- Empathetic, approachable and enthusiastic.
- Willingness to learn and undertake further training.
- Physically able to carry out the duties of the role.
- Satisfactory police check.
Desirable Skills
- Teaching Assistant NVQ Level 2 or equivalent qualification.
- Experience supporting students with personal care and medical needs.
- Experience working with autistic students or those with complex communication and behavioural needs.
- Knowledge of support services available for young people.
- Experience preparing education, behaviour or support plans.
- Ability to motivate students and encourage positive behaviour.
- Isle of Man Worker status.
