Job Purpose: Support students with complex and additional needs at Ballakermeen High School, helping them access learning across Key Stages 3 and 4. Working as part of the Learning Support Services team, you will help students develop confidence, make progress and feel included within the classroom and wider school.
Duties
- Support students with additional and complex needs across different subjects.
- Help students access learning activities and make progress.
- Build positive relationships with students and act as a positive role model.
- Provide pastoral support and encourage confidence and self-esteem.
- Promote inclusion and ensure students have equal opportunities to learn and develop.
- Support positive behaviour and deal with issues before they escalate.
- Encourage students to take responsibility for their own behaviour.
- Prepare and maintain specialist equipment and learning resources.
- Attend SEND complex needs reviews.
- Work closely with classroom teachers and share relevant information.
- Liaise with parents and carers and take part in meetings when required.
- Use ICT and other resources to support students' learning.
- Support students during emergency evacuations.
- Attend meetings, training and development activities.
- Follow safeguarding, child protection, health and safety, confidentiality and data protection procedures.
Essential Skills
- GCSE Maths and English at Grade C/4 or above, or equivalent Level 2 qualifications.
- Experience working with children or young people of the relevant age.
- Calm and disciplined approach when working under pressure.
- Strong belief in the potential of all young people to succeed.
- Confidence to communicate and work effectively with students and staff.
- Good written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Good numerical, analytical and IT skills.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and databases.
- Ability to use ICT effectively to support learning.
- Ability to work accurately and learn new IT systems quickly.
- Enthusiastic, positive and able to work as part of a close-knit team.
- Flexible and able to adapt to changes in the role.
- Professional and co-operative approach.
- Knowledge of relevant policies, codes of practice and legislation.
- Ability to work the required hours.
- Satisfactory police check.
Desirable Skills
- Teaching Assistant NVQ Level 2 or equivalent/higher relevant qualification.
- Experience working with students or young adults with complex and additional needs.
- Experience working in a secondary school with students with a range of educational needs.
- Good planning, organisational and time management skills.
- Problem-solving skills and ability to use initiative.
- Ability to suggest improvements to systems and ways of working.
- Isle of Man Worker status.
