Job Purpose: Support students with identified additional and complex learning needs to access education, develop confidence and independence, and achieve their full potential. Work closely with the SENCo, teaching staff and the Education Support Team to provide learning, behaviour and personal support within the classroom and across the wider school.
Duties
- Support students with additional educational needs to access learning safely.
- Promote inclusion and encourage all students to participate fully in school life.
- Assist with the development and implementation of Pupil Profiles.
- Build positive relationships with students and act as a positive role model.
- Encourage confidence, independence and positive self-esteem.
- Support students to make positive choices about learning, behaviour and attendance.
- Assist with assessing students who require additional support under guidance.
- Attend to students' personal, social and emotional needs where required.
- Support teachers in planning and delivering learning activities.
- Monitor and record students' progress and provide regular feedback to teaching staff.
- Promote positive behaviour and implement behaviour management strategies.
- Administer routine tests, invigilate exams and support exam access arrangements.
- Provide general administrative support including photocopying, typing, filing and coursework administration.
- Support literacy, numeracy and other learning programmes.
- Help students develop confidence using ICT and learning resources.
- Supervise students during breaks, educational visits and school activities.
- Attend meetings, training and professional development activities.
- Follow safeguarding, health and safety, confidentiality and data protection procedures at all times.
Essential Skills
- GCSE English and Maths at Grade C/4 or above, or equivalent Level 2 qualifications.
- Experience working with secondary school-aged children or young people.
- Understanding of relevant policies, codes of practice and legislation.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, colleagues, parents and external agencies.
- Excellent organisational and record-keeping skills.
- Ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines.
- Ability to escalate important issues appropriately.
- Ability to use ICT effectively to support learning.
- Ability to evaluate your own learning needs and undertake professional development.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
- Understanding of safeguarding principles and practice.
- Empathetic, caring, flexible and approachable.
- Self-motivated, proactive and enthusiastic.
- Commitment to inclusion, confidentiality, diversity and professional standards.
- Willingness to participate fully in school life, including extra-curricular activities.
- Ability to meet the hours and demands of the role.
- Satisfactory police check.
Desirable Skills
- NVQ Level 2 for Teaching Assistants or equivalent qualification.
- Completion of the DfES Teaching Assistant Induction Programme.
- Training in literacy or other learning strategies.
- First Aid qualification or willingness to work towards it.
- Experience working with vulnerable students.
- Experience promoting good practice to others.
- Knowledge of examination assessment methods.
- Understanding of adolescent development and learning processes.
- Knowledge of vocational subjects such as ASDAN or AQA awards.
- Isle of Man Worker status.
