Job Purpose: To support students with complex and additional needs in the classroom, working as part of the Learning Support Services team within the Special Educational Needs Department. This is an important role helping students achieve their potential and supporting the continued development of the SEND team.
Duties
- Support the SENDCo and Learning Support Services team across Key Stage 3 and 4
- Build positive relationships with students and act as a role model
- Manage behaviour confidently and follow school systems to keep learning on track
- Create a positive and inclusive learning environment
- Provide pastoral support and encourage confidence and self-esteem
- Support students to access lessons and learning activities
- Prepare and maintain classroom resources and specialist equipment
- Attend SEND complex needs reviews
- Work closely with teachers and share key information
- Communicate sensitively with parents/carers when required
- Follow safeguarding, health and safety, confidentiality and data protection policies
- Support fire evacuation procedures when needed
- Attend meetings and training, including occasional sessions outside normal hours
- Take part in supervision and performance reviews
- Contribute to the wider life and ethos of the school
Essential Skills
- GCSE Maths and English at Grade 4 (C) or above (or equivalent)
- Experience working with children or young people
- Calm and confident approach, especially under pressure
- Positive, enthusiastic and team-focused attitude
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Good IT skills and ability to use ICT to support learning
- Good numeracy skills
- Ability to work accurately and follow policies and procedures
- Willingness to complete safeguarding training
- Satisfactory police check
- Able to work the required hours
Desirable skills
- Teaching Assistant Level 2 qualification (or similar)
- Experience supporting young people with complex and additional needs
- Experience working in a secondary school
- Good organisational and time management skills
- Problem-solving skills and ability to suggest improvements
- Isle of Man worker status
