Education Support Officer - SPC - Rushen Primary School - DOES-025324

Job Purpose: Support learners with moderate, severe and complex needs in the Specialist Provision Centre (SPC) at Rushen Primary School. You will help learners access education, develop their independence and take part in school life, while providing individual learning, personal and medical support where needed.  

Duties  
- Support learners in the SPC and wider school environment.
- Help learners access learning activities as independently as possible.
- Support learners with social, emotional, behavioural, physical, sensory and learning needs.
- Assist with personal care, health, hygiene and life skills.
- Undertake required medical training and provide agreed medical care within your competencies, which may include PEG feeding, suction, catheterisation and administering medication.
- Encourage learners to interact with others and take part in activities.
- Help develop and follow individual Education, Behaviour, Support and Mentoring plans.
- Build positive relationships with learners and act as a good role model.
- Support learners moving between different stages of education or returning following an absence.
- Encourage confidence, self-esteem and positive behaviour.
- Help plan and deliver learning activities and intervention programmes.
- Monitor learners' progress and provide feedback to teachers and the SPC Manager.
- Support learners who are distressed and help manage conflicts and incidents appropriately.
- Prepare and maintain specialist equipment and learning resources.
- Support learners to develop their ICT skills and independence.
- Build constructive relationships with parents and carers.
- Work with other professionals and agencies to support individual learners.
- Accompany learners on school visits and offsite learning activities.
- Attend meetings, training and development activities.
- Follow safeguarding, confidentiality, data protection and health and safety procedures.

Essential Skills
- GCSE Maths and English at Grade C/4 or above, or equivalent Level 2 qualifications, plus experience working with children or young people of the relevant age.
- Ability to support learners with moderate, severe and profound multiple learning difficulties or disabilities.
- Ability to contribute to pupil assessments, individual education plans and learning targets.
- Ability to help develop Education, Behaviour, Support, Mentoring and Care Plans and risk assessments.
- Ability to provide appropriate support to distressed pupils.
- Ability to support pupils moving between different stages of education.
- Ability to build positive working relationships with learners and staff.
- Good knowledge of strategies to engage children and young people with complex needs and remove barriers to learning.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Good organisation skills and ability to prioritise your workload.
- Ability to relate well to children, young people and adults.
- Warm, approachable and empathetic manner.
- Good written and verbal communication skills.
- Flexible and adaptable with the ability to use your own initiative.

Desirable Skills  
- Teaching Assistant NVQ Level 2 or equivalent, or a relevant higher-level qualification.
- Experience supporting children's personal, social, health and hygiene needs and completing medical competencies.
- Experience helping children and young people make choices about their learning and behaviour.
- Ability to motivate learners and build their confidence and self-esteem.
- Experience supporting learners on the autistic spectrum with significant communication or behavioural challenges.
- Knowledge of relevant curriculum areas and learning programmes.
- Understanding of support services available to children and young people.
- Isle of Man Worker status.
