Job Purpose: To work as part of the Specialist Provision Centre (SPC) team at QEII High School to support learners with moderate, severe and complex needs, helping them access highly personalised learning, develop life skills and stay safe and included in school and the wider community, working 32 hours 30 minutes per week, term time only at Level 2 ESO / Pay Band 7.
Duties
- Work under the direction of the SPC Manager and teaching staff to deliver learning, care and support programmes for learners in the SPC, wider school and during offsite activities.
- Promote inclusion, safety, independence and wellbeing for all learners, attending to personal care, medical and life-skills needs as required following training and agreed procedures.
- Support individual and small-group teaching, adapting activities, using ICT and specialist resources, and giving clear feedback on progress, achievement, behaviour and attendance.
- Help develop and implement individual education, behaviour, support and mentoring plans, care plans and risk assessments, and contribute to reviews, assessments and target setting.
- Build positive relationships with learners, parents/carers, staff and other professionals, encouraging engagement, good behaviour, good attendance and successful transitions between classes and phases.
- Prepare learning spaces and displays, organise resources, provide routine administrative support and help run enrichment and extra-curricular activities and educational visits.
- Follow all policies and procedures for safeguarding, child protection, health and safety, confidentiality and data protection, and take part in meetings, training and performance development.
Essential Skills
- GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent Level 2) and experience of working with children/young people of the relevant age.
- Ability to support pupils with moderate, severe and profound multiple learning difficulties/disabilities, including behaviour and communication needs, within an education setting.
- Experience contributing to assessment of pupils and supporting the development of curriculum provision, small-step planning and individual education plans and targets.
- Ability to assist teaching staff with education, behaviour, support, mentoring, care plans and risk assessments.
- Ability to provide appropriate support for distressed pupils and to support their speedy and effective transition across education phases.
- Ability to establish productive, respectful working relationships with pupils and staff, acting as a positive role model.
- A good working knowledge of strategies to promote the engagement of children and young people with complex needs and remove barriers to learning.
- Ability to self-evaluate learning needs, actively seek learning opportunities and work constructively as part of a team, understanding classroom roles and responsibilities.
- Strong self-organisation skills with the ability to prioritise workload.
- Ability to relate well to young people and adults and build mutually respectful relationships.

- Warmth, approachability, empathy for learners and high expectations of pupils, with the ability to celebrate success.
- Sound written and oral communication and interpersonal skills and willingness to be a reflective, solution-focused practitioner.

- Willingness to undertake and pass required medical competencies and safeguarding training.
- Satisfactory Police check.
Desirable skills
- Teaching Assistant NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) or higher relevant qualification.
- Experience of attending to children’s personal care, social, health and hygiene needs, including completing medical competencies.
- Experience providing information, support and advice to enable children and young people to make positive choices about their learning and behaviour.
- Ability to challenge and motivate pupils and give feedback that promotes and reinforces self-esteem.
- Experience of working with students on the autistic spectrum and/or with significant communication and behavioural challenges.
- Working knowledge of curriculum areas and other relevant learning programmes in a primary or secondary school setting.
- Understanding of the range of support services and providers and how they support learners with additional needs.
- Isle of Man Worker.
