Job Purpose: Support learners with moderate, severe and complex needs within the Specialist Provision Centre (SPC) at St Johns School. You will help learners access education, develop their independence and take part in school life, while providing personal and medical support where required.   

Duties  
- Support learners with a range of social, emotional, behavioural, physical, sensory and learning needs.
- Help learners access learning activities as independently as possible.
- Support learners with personal care, health, hygiene and life skills.
- Encourage learners to interact with others and take part in activities.
- Help develop and follow individual education, behaviour, support and mentoring plans.
- Build positive relationships with learners and act as a positive role model.
- Encourage confidence, independence and positive self-esteem.
- Support learners during transitions and when returning to school after an absence.
- Monitor learners' progress and provide feedback to teachers.
- Support positive behaviour and help learners make appropriate choices.
- Carry out agreed medical care following training, which may include PEG feeding, suction, catheterisation and administering medication.
- Assist teachers with planning and delivering learning activities.
- Prepare and use specialist equipment and resources.
- Support learners to develop their ICT skills and independence.
- Work with other professionals and agencies to support individual learners.
- Build positive relationships with parents and carers.
- Provide general administrative support when required.
- Accompany and support learners on school visits and off-site activities.
- Attend meetings, training and development activities.
- Follow safeguarding, child protection, health and safety, confidentiality and data protection procedures.

Essential Skills  
- GCSE Maths and English at Grade C/4 or above, or equivalent Level 2 qualifications.
- Experience working with children or young people of the relevant age.
- Ability to support learners with moderate, severe and profound learning difficulties or disabilities.
- Ability to build positive relationships with learners and staff.
- Ability to contribute to assessments, curriculum planning and individual education plans.
- Ability to assist with education, behaviour, support and care plans and risk assessments.
- Ability to provide appropriate support for distressed learners.
- Good knowledge of strategies for engaging children and young people with complex needs.
- Ability to help remove barriers to learning.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team.
- Good organisational skills and ability to prioritise workload.
- Good written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
- Willingness to learn and develop new skills.
- Commitment to equality and inclusion.
- Flexible and adaptable with the ability to use your own initiative.
- Warm, approachable and empathetic manner.
- Positive and enthusiastic approach.
- Physically able to carry out the duties of the role.
- Satisfactory police check.

Desirable Skills  
- Teaching Assistant NVQ Level 2 or equivalent, or a relevant higher-level qualification.
- Experience supporting children's personal, health and hygiene needs, including medical competencies.
- Ability to help children and young people make positive choices about their learning and behaviour.
- Understanding of support services available to children and young people.
- Experience motivating learners and promoting confidence and self-esteem.
- Experience supporting autistic learners with significant communication and behavioural challenges.
- Isle of Man Worker status.

This is a limited term contract covering maternity leave for one year from October 2026.
