Job Purpose: To support children and young people with additional needs in a specialist school setting, helping them access learning, build confidence, and develop life skills as part of a supportive team.
Duties
- Support learners with additional needs to take part in lessons and school life
- Help with personal care, health, hygiene and life skills
- Encourage positive behaviour, confidence and independence
- Work with teachers to deliver learning activities and support plans
- Monitor progress and give feedback on behaviour, attendance and achievements
- Build positive relationships with learners, parents/carers and staff
- Support learners during school activities and trips
- Help create a safe, inclusive and supportive environment
- Assist with classroom organisation and resources
- Take part in training, including medical care tasks where required
Essential Skills
- GCSE Maths and English (or equivalent Level 2 qualification)
- Experience working with children or young people
- Ability to support learners with additional needs
- Good teamwork and communication skills
- Ability to build positive relationships and act as a role model
- Understanding of safeguarding and child protection responsibilities
- Ability to stay organised and manage workload
- Positive, patient and supportive attitude
Desirable Skills
- Teaching Assistant qualification (Level 2 or above)
- Experience supporting children with complex needs or disabilities
- Experience supporting personal care and medical needs
- Experience working with autistic learners or behavioural needs
- Knowledge of school curriculum and learning programmes
- Understanding of support services available to young people
