Job Purpose: To work as an Education Support Officer in the Specialist Provision Centre at Cronk y Berry School, supporting children and young people with moderate, severe and complex needs to access highly personalised learning, personal care and social development so they can be safe, included and able to flourish in school and the wider community.  

Duties  
- Work under the direction of the SPC Manager and teachers to deliver agreed learning, care and support programmes for individuals and small groups.
- Promote the inclusion, safety, wellbeing and independence of learners with a range of social, emotional, behavioural, physical, sensory and learning needs.
- Attend to personal care, health, hygiene and medical needs (following training and competencies) and support the development of life skills.
- Encourage learners to communicate, interact with others and take part in activities led by teachers and SPC staff, including enrichment and extra-curricular sessions.
- Help develop, deliver and review Individual Education, Behaviour, Support and Mentoring plans, care plans and risk assessments.
- Support assessment by observing learners, recording progress and providing clear feedback to teachers and SPC staff.
- Promote positive behaviour, de-escalate incidents in line with school policy and help learners take responsibility for their choices.
- Help create and maintain a purposeful, well-organised classroom/SPC environment, including preparing resources, ICT and specialist equipment.
- Build constructive relationships with parents/carers, visiting professionals and wider support services to aid learners’ progress and transitions between phases.
- Provide general administrative support such as photocopying, filing and coursework administration as needed.
- Accompany and support learners around school and on off-site visits, ensuring safeguarding, health and safety and school policies are followed.
- Take part in meetings, training, performance development and safeguarding activities, and contribute to the wider ethos and aims of the school.

Essential Skills
- GCSE English and Maths (or equivalent) and experience of working with children/young people of relevant age.
- Ability to provide curriculum and pastoral support for pupils with moderate, severe and complex learning difficulties/disabilities in an education setting.
- Experience of working as part of a team to assess pupils and contribute to targets, small-step planning and individual education plans.
- Ability to help develop Education, Behaviour, Support and Mentoring plans, care plans and risk assessments.
- Able to provide calm, appropriate support to distressed pupils and help them regulate their behaviour.
- Ability to support smooth transitions for pupils between classes, key stages or settings.
- Able to build productive working relationships with staff and pupils and act as a positive role model.
- Good understanding of strategies to engage learners with complex needs and remove barriers to learning.
- Able to work constructively as part of a team, understanding classroom roles and responsibilities.
- Good self-organisation and ability to prioritise workload in a busy setting.
- Able to relate well to children, young people and adults, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Warm, approachable, empathetic and able to celebrate pupils’ achievements and maintain high expectations.
- Flexible, adaptable, solution-focused and able to use own initiative while following agreed policies.
- Commitment to inclusion, safeguarding and equal opportunities for all learners.
- Physically able to carry out the moving, handling and care aspects of the role and able to pass required pre-employment checks, including a satisfactory Police check.

Desirable skills
- Teaching Assistant NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) or a higher-level relevant qualification.
- Completion of, or willingness to complete, role-specific training such as Safeguarding, Safer People Moving and Handling, First Aid, Team Teach, Signalong and medical competencies (e.g. enteral peg feeding, suction).
- Experience of attending to personal care, health and hygiene needs, including basic medical procedures, in an education or care setting.
- Experience of working with pupils on the autistic spectrum and/or with significant communication and behavioural challenges.
- Ability to provide pupils with information, support and advice to help them make choices about learning and behaviour.
- Experience of using strategies to challenge and motivate pupils and give constructive feedback to build self-esteem.
- Working knowledge of curriculum areas and learning programmes in primary and/or secondary school settings.
- Understanding of the range of external support services and providers available for children, young people and families.
- Experience of working in or knowledge of Isle of Man education settings and Isle of Man Worker status.
