Job Purpose: Support young people with moderate, severe and complex needs at Castle Rushen High School’s Specialist Provision Centre. Help learners take part in lessons and activities, build confidence and develop independence.
Duties:
- Support learners in the classroom, around school and during off-site activities.
- Help with learning, communication, social skills and everyday life skills.
- Provide personal care, including intimate care, and medical support after completing the required training.
- Help staff develop and follow individual learning, behaviour and care plans.
- Encourage positive behaviour and support learners who are distressed.
- Record progress and share feedback with teachers.
- Prepare learning resources and specialist equipment.
- Follow safeguarding, health and safety, and confidentiality procedures.
Essential Skills:
- GCSE Maths and English at grades A*–C / 9–4, or the listed equivalent Level 2 qualifications.
- Experience working with children or young people of the relevant age.
- Ability to support learners with complex learning needs and disabilities.
- Knowledge of ways to help young people with complex needs engage in learning.
- Ability to contribute to individual learning, behaviour and care plans, and risk assessments.
- Good communication, teamwork and organisational skills.
- Ability to build respectful relationships and support distressed learners.
- A warm, empathetic and positive approach, with a commitment to inclusion.
- Flexibility, initiative and willingness to learn and complete training.
- Physical ability to carry out the role.
- A satisfactory enhanced police check with barring.
Desirable Skills:
- A Level 2 Teaching Assistant qualification, a relevant equivalent or a relevant higher qualification.
- Experience supporting children’s personal care, health and hygiene needs.
- Experience working with autistic learners with significant communication and behavioural needs.
- Understanding of available support services.
- Ability to help learners make choices, build self-esteem and recognise their progress.
- Isle of Man Worker status.
