Job Purpose: Support young people with additional and complex needs at St Ninian’s High School’s Specialist Provision Centre, helping them take part in learning, build confidence and develop independence.
Duties:
- Support pupils with learning activities in the centre, wider school and on offsite visits.
- Help pupils develop communication, social and everyday life skills.
- Assist with personal care, hygiene and medical needs, completing training and medical competencies as required.
- Help staff develop and follow individual learning, behaviour, support and care plans.
- Encourage positive behaviour and support pupils who are distressed.
- Record pupils’ progress and share feedback with teaching staff.
- Prepare learning resources and specialist equipment, and help pupils use technology.
- Work with staff, parents, carers and other professionals, following safeguarding and confidentiality procedures.
Essential Skills:
- GCSE English and Maths at grade C/4 or above, or the specified Level 2 equivalents.
- Experience working with children or young people of secondary-school age.
- Ability to support learning and wellbeing for pupils with moderate, severe and complex disabilities or learning difficulties.
- Knowledge of ways to engage pupils with complex needs and help them overcome barriers to learning.
- Ability to help develop individual learning, behaviour, support and care plans and risk assessments.
- Ability to support distressed pupils and help learners move between stages of education.
- Good teamwork, communication and organisational skills.
- A warm, positive and respectful approach, with flexibility, empathy and initiative.
- Commitment to inclusion, safeguarding and ongoing learning and development.
- Physically able to carry out the duties and able to obtain a satisfactory enhanced police check with barring.
Desirable Skills:
- A Level 2 Teaching Assistant qualification or equivalent, or a relevant higher-level qualification.
- Experience supporting children’s personal care, health and hygiene needs, including medical competencies.
- Experience supporting autistic learners with significant communication and behavioural needs.
- Ability to help young people make choices about their learning and behaviour.
- Ability to motivate pupils, build self-esteem and provide helpful feedback.
- Understanding of available support services.
- Isle of Man Worker status.
