Job Purpose: To work as part of the site team to thoroughly clean designated areas of Ballacottier School, maintain high standards of cleanliness and hygiene, and help ensure a safe, welcoming environment for pupils, staff and visitors, including reporting any health and safety or maintenance concerns.
Duties
- Clean classrooms, corridors, toilets and other school areas by sweeping, mopping, washing, vacuuming, polishing and dusting, including internal glass and touch points.
- Empty bins and remove rubbish safely for disposal.
- Clean toilets, showers and associated fittings to required hygiene standards.
- Use powered cleaning equipment such as buffers, scrubbers, wet and dry vacuums and carpet cleaners after appropriate training, including basic upkeep such as cleaning heads and changing filters and bags.
- Follow health and safety procedures, including safe use and storage of cleaning products, awareness of COSHH guidance and completion of risk assessments for potentially hazardous tasks.
- Take responsibility for own health, safety and hygiene at work, including wearing suitable clothing and footwear.
- Monitor work areas for hazards, spillages or obstructions, taking immediate action where necessary and reporting accidents, hazards and maintenance issues promptly.
- Support basic site management, including reporting faults, helping with energy efficiency (e.g. switching off lights) and having an awareness of site security arrangements.
- Assist, when required, with opening and closing the site in line with local procedures and in emergencies.
- Help move furniture and equipment around the site as requested.
- Provide additional cover for other cleaning and caretaking staff when required and work flexibly as part of the wider team.
- Maintain good working relationships with colleagues and contribute to a high-quality, customer-focused service.
- Maintain confidentiality at all times and work in line with school and Department policies.
- Complete required safeguarding and child protection training and follow school procedures to promote and protect the welfare of children and young people, reporting any concerns to the designated safeguarding lead.
Essential Skills
- Previous experience of working in a cleaning role.
- Experience of using different types of cleaning machinery for multiple surfaces and of cleaning equipment after use.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work professionally with colleagues, children and parents.
- Strong focus on high standards of cleanliness and hygiene and ability to discuss work areas and equipment needed.
- Able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team, with a flexible and adaptable approach.
- Positive attitude to challenges and change and willingness to be trained and apply new skills.
- Active contributor to school life, taking pride in delivering a good, measurable standard of work.

- Current First Aid Certificate.
- Knowledge of health and safety practices for cleaning, including COSHH and expected standards of cleanliness and hygiene.
- Able to prioritise areas for cleaning, choose appropriate materials and equipment, and report equipment breakdowns or request new supplies.
