Industry Qualifications

For insurance purposes, taxi drivers must over the age of 21, have a full clean driving licence and have been driving for a minimum of 12 months.

If you wish to become a taxi driver in the Isle of Man you will need to take a test at the testing centre in Tromode. It is known as a 'Ply For Hire' licence.

The test is 75 minutes long and under test conditions. The questions on the test will vary depending on which area you will drive in – for example, those applicants wishing to drive in Douglas or Onchan areas will need to take an east test.

The first test is free as part of your application, but any subsequent tests cost £20 each. You are afforded a maximum of 3 attempts before your application is deferred for 6 months. The best way to prepare for the test is to study the area you wish to drive by taking a drive around the area and studying the maps in the phonebook and/or on Google.
