Builders' Merchant Sales Assistant
Builders’ merchants sales assistants supply building materials, tools and equipment to tradespeople and the public. Staff may work on a trade counter, in a showroom, warehouse or yard, helping customers find the right products.
Day-to-day Tasks
- Ask customers about their projects and help identify suitable materials.
- Explain product features, availability and prices.
- Prepare quotations, take orders and process payments.
- Check stock and arrange collections or deliveries.
- Receive deliveries and check goods against delivery notes.
- Help organise stock and prepare customer orders.
- Deal with returns, damaged goods and supplier queries.
- Keep counters, storage areas and yards tidy and safe.
Skills and Knowledge
- Helpful customer service and clear communication.
- An interest in building materials and construction products.
- Numeracy for quantities, measurements, prices and payments.
- Accuracy when preparing orders and checking stock.
- Confidence using sales and stock-control systems.
- Teamwork and the ability to prioritise during busy periods.
- Safe working practices when handling materials and working around vehicles.
