Chefs prepare, cook and present food in hotels, bars and restaurants.

Day-to-day Tasks

  • creating menus that look good and are healthy
  • decide what food is needed, order it, and check it when it arrives
  • cook and make food look appealing
  • able to handle pressure and work fast so that the food is ready on time, especially when things get busy
  • follow the rules: make sure everything is clean and safe, following health and safety and licensing rules

Skills and Knowledge

  • to be thorough and pay attention to detail
  • knowledge of food production methods
  • the ability to accept criticism and work well under pressure

  • the ability to work well with others
  • knowledge of manufacturing production and processes

Industry Qualifications

There are various routes to becoming a chef, but you predominantly seek experience. This experience may come in the form of training. Such as UCM culinary courses that can be viewed here.
