Junior Hairdresser / Salon Assistant

A career as a hairstylist can be a good fit for you if you are a creative individual looking to work with a diverse range of customers. You get to manage your schedule while also assisting others in feeling good about themselves.

You can choose your own career path from working in a salon to owning your own business or working on a cruise ship.

Day-to-day Tasks

  • shampooing hair
  • simple cuts
  • mixing hair colour
  • replenishing towels and other supplies for the team to use
  • cleaning the salon and keeping it tidy
  • booking appointments
  • sweeping floors & mopping

Skills required

  • creativity
  • customer service and 'people' skills
  • great practical skills
  • an awareness of fashion and trends
  • a willingness to learn new techniques
  • an awareness of health and safety issues and a willingness to learn more

Industry qualifications

A two-year Apprenticeship course is offered by UCM. To qualify you must be working full-time as a trainee hairdresser. For more information visit www.ucm.ac.im. There are no academic entry requirements but you will need a good understanding of English.

You can also attend a full-time course with UCM starting with an NVQ level 1 in hairdressing and then progressing to Level 2. Each of these courses takes one year to complete.
