Apprentice Engineer

Engineering is a challenging and rewarding career. From your mobile phone to the furniture you sit on, everything we see and touch around us is likely to have been engineered.

The engineering apprenticeship starts at University College, Isle of Man (UCM). Where you will study at a dedicated facility called AMTC (Hills Meadow) the various aspects of engineering for 2 or 3 years (depending on entry level). Upon completion of these foundation years, you will then apply for a position with one of our islands engineering companies. These include Swagelok, Ronaldsway Aircraft Co, Strix, MUA, Suez and Triumph. At your engineering organisation, you get to earn while you learn, as you are paid as an employee from day one. You will also continue your education with UCM on day release, 1 or 2 days per week whilst learning practical skills day to day on site. Your specialism in engineering will be one of the following – CNC (Computer Numerical Controlled) Machinist (most common), inspection, assembly, or maintenance.

When you start your apprenticeship, you will start to learn -

  • basic engineering principles
  • What is a technical drawing?
  • CAD – Computer Aided Design
  • Maths for engineering
  • about manual engineering (milling, drills, grinders, and lathes)
  • about CNC engineering (Computer Numerically Controlled) machines including machine tool programs
  • about Quality principles and how to measure parts, what tolerances are and how quality is measured in manufacturing
  • about assembly of parts
  • materials science including metal properties and treatments used to alter their properties

Working environment

  • you could work in a factory
  • your working environment may be noisy
  • you may need to wear protective clothing

  • City & Guilds 2850 Level 2 Certificate in Engineering
  • Certificate in General Manufacturing Engineering (City & Guilds 2850 Level 3)
  • OCR Level 3 Foundation Diploma in Engineering (General)
