Manual Operative (Water Works Gang)

Day-to-day tasks

• safe excavation to lay, joint, backfill and reinstate for new water mains and services
• disinfection of water mains and hygiene procedures
• installation of new services and repairing or renewing existing services
• renewal of / repairing burst water mains
• repairing water mains, valves, hydrants, stop-taps and marker posts
• routine isolation, draining and re-charging mains
• investigation, detection, and prevention of wastewater
• flushing mains.

 Skills and knowledge

• awareness of, and compliance with, relevant health, safety and environmental legislation and Industry standards
• team player
• positive attitude
• possess numeracy skills and demonstrate some arithmetic ability
• have basic literacy and able to complete forms and describe tasks in writing
• be organised and reliable
• be familiar with working with Risk Assessments
• experience of groundworks
• be in good physical health and confident working safely in confined spaces
• possess a good geographical knowledge of the Island
