Young Care Worker

Young Carers' is a project that runs sessions for young carers aged between 5 and 18. Young carers are young people who care for someone in their family who has a illness, disability or health condition and these sessions allow them to have a break from their caring role and enjoy some time with other children.

What do Young Carer Workers do?

Young Carers' Workers are responsible for running the sessions for young carers to attend. They have to plan and prepare activities and sometimes food for the children and also have to pick the up and drop them home from the sessions.

Young Carers' Workers also help to plan special activities for young people during the school holidays and may have one to one chats with them to discuss any problems they may be having.

Being a Young Carers' Worker can be a very rewarding role as it involves making a real difference to young peoples’ lives and having a positive impact on them.

A Young Carers Worker may do some of the following:

  • planning and preparing activities for the sessions such as crafts and games
  • supervising young people
  • driving a minibus and picking up young carers
  • preparing a meal for young carers to eat on the session
  • communicating with parents and families
  • talking to young carers about their worries and concerns

Industry qualifications

Employers will have their own criteria for this role, however most Young Carers' Workers do not require any previous qualifications or work experience as full training will be given.

A qualification in childcare or health and social care, or previous experience of working with children and young people, may be beneficial to some candidates, and qualifications can be obtained through University College Isle of Man.
