Charity Fundraiser

A fundraiser helps raise money to support the work of a charity.

As a charity fundraiser you will need to:

  • motivate and help supporters to maximise the funds they raise
  • organise events and activities 
  • develop new and imaginative fundraising activities, many of which involve organising events
  • raise awareness of the charity in the local community and with businesses
  • increase funds by researching and targeting charitable trusts whose criteria match the charity's aims and activities
  • oversee corporate fundraising, including employee giving and matched giving from employers
  • manage and update databases to record donation information
  • write applications for funding

Skill & Knowledge

  • to be passionate and committed about the work of the charity
  • the ability to build and maintain relationships
  • the ability to influence others using excellent communication skills
  • the capability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • good organisational and project management skills
  • to be resilient, particularly when faced with setbacks
  • a willingness to carry out a range of administrative tasks

Industry qualifications

Each charity will have its own requirements.

It is not necessary to have an industry qualification to be a charity fundraiser but it will help if you have a qualification or experience in marketing, media or business.

You can take a fundraising course with the Chartered Institute of Fundraising https://ciof.org.uk/ but this is usually done on the job.
