Job Purpose:
To carry out maintenance, repair, and conservation work on MNH properties, including historic buildings, monuments, and land. Work may be done independently or as part of a team, supporting public spaces, exhibitions, and visitor sites.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct routine maintenance, repairs, and conservation work.
- Assess maintenance needs and source required materials.
- Carry out minor building repairs and installations.
- Perform traditional conservation tasks (e.g., thatching, stone walling, lime-washing).
- Support grounds and monument maintenance as needed.
- Inspect and report damage, completing urgent safety repairs.
- Maintain records of work, materials, and progress.
- Work safely, following risk assessments and health & safety procedures.
- Occasionally supervise or collaborate with volunteers.
Essential Skills & Qualifications:
- NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) in a trade (e.g., joinery, bricklaying, masonry).
- Experience in building maintenance and repairs in public or historic buildings.
Skills in one or more of the following:
- Bricklaying, carpentry, plastering, tiling, painting/decorating
- Roofing (slate/tile), stone walling, thatching
- Plumbing or electrical installations
- Basic IT skills (email, reports, Microsoft Word/Excel).
- Understanding of health & safety practices.
- Full, clean driving licence.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Physically fit for manual work in varied outdoor conditions.
Desirable Skills:
- Knowledge of traditional materials (lime mortars, plasters, renders).
- Experience working with volunteers.
- Interest in heritage conservation and outdoor work.
- Isle of Man worker status
