The Macmillan Cancer Information and Support Service (MCISS) provides free, confidential support to anyone affected by a cancer diagnosis. Volunteers will assist the MCISS Manager in the operation of the service by carrying out the duties outlined below while promoting the aims and values of the service. A full induction and training will be provided to carry out the role confidently.
Time Commitment:
Ideally, at least one four-hour shift per week for a minimum of six months.
Shifts are between 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM or 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday.
Main Responsibilities:
- Welcome visitors to the service and help them feel at ease.
- Talk with each visitor to determine what help and information they need.
- Assist visitors in finding relevant information, such as leaflets, booklets, or online resources, or signpost them to local services.
- Refer visitors with complex inquiries to a Cancer Support Worker or MCISS Co-ordinator.
- Provide emotional support through active listening and empathy.
- Offer follow-up support where necessary via the Cancer Support Workers/MCISS Co-ordinator.
- Maintain records by inputting brief details of inquiries via the PC.
- Display, organize, and order information resources to maintain stock levels.
- Answer telephone inquiries and take messages for the MCISS team.
- Promote the MCISS within Manx Care by distributing informational materials.
- Assist with outreach events across the island.
- Attend regular support meetings with the MCISS team and other volunteers.
- Participate in training relevant to the role.
- Inform the MCISS Manager of any changes in circumstances affecting the role.
- Assist with administrative tasks such as photocopying, filing, and replenishing information materials.
- Adhere to procedures regarding incidents, accidents, fire, and complaints, reporting to the MCISS Manager as needed.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding all aspects of the MCISS.
