Job Purpose: To support teachers and pupils across the early years and primary phase, helping children access learning, stay safe and feel included, while preparing resources and supporting classroom activities.
Duties
- Support pupils in lessons so they can take part in learning activities confidently.
- Help manage behaviour positively and promote independence and self-esteem.
- Support pupils with additional needs, including personal care where required.
- Assist with Individual Education Plans, behaviour plans and intervention programmes.
- Prepare and organise classroom resources and equipment.
- Monitor progress and give feedback to teachers on achievement, behaviour and attendance.
- Carry out routine marking, tests and basic admin tasks such as photocopying and filing.
- Support literacy, numeracy and other planned learning programmes.
- Use ICT to support learning and help pupils develop confidence with technology.
- Build positive relationships with pupils, staff and parents/carers.
- Supervise pupils at breaktimes, lunchtimes and extra-curricular activities.
- Follow safeguarding, health and safety and child protection procedures at all times.
Essential Skills
- GCSE Maths and English (Grade A*–C / 9–4) or Level 2 equivalent.
- Experience working with children or young people.
- Ability to support pupils with additional needs and personal care.
- Understanding of how children learn and develop.
- Knowledge of the primary curriculum.
- Ability to use technology to support learning.
- Strong communication skills with children and adults.
- Able to work as part of a team and use your own initiative.
- Calm, positive and flexible approach.
- Willingness to complete first aid and safeguarding training.
- Satisfactory Police Check.
- Physically able to meet the demands of the role.
Desirable skills
- Teaching Assistant NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent or higher qualification).
- Understanding of Nurture and Inclusion principles.
- Knowledge of wider support services.
- Isle of Man Worker status.
